This post conference excursion explores the recently reactivated volcanic systems of the Reykjanes Peninsula and their societal impacts. Participants will visit volcanic sites associated with the renewed activity that began in March 2021 at Fagradalsfjall, following an approximately 800 years of dormancy. Three eruptions occurred at this site between 2021 and 2023 and were widely referred to as “touristic eruptions”, reflecting the large numbers of visitors who were able to observe the eruptions at close range. These events posed minimal risk to critical infrastructure. In contrast, a second phase of volcanic activity began in December 2023, characterized by a series of fissure eruptions along the Sundhnjúkagígar volcanic system. These eruptions occurred in close proximity to key infrastructure, including the Svartsengi geothermal power plant, the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, and the fishing town of Grindavík that faced evacuation of all its residents in November 2023 due to the volcanic unrest. This excursion highlights this active rift volcanism, recent lava flows, and the interaction between volcanic processes, infrastructure, and hazard management. It also gives insights into contrasting views on future developments in the fishing village, still facing uncertainty.  It will provide participants with first‑hand insight into these activities.

This is a bus trip including some hiking, so good shoes are needed and participants should dress according to weather. It can be sunny but also rain and wind. For weather forecast: https://en.vedur.is/  You can take a look at maps of the volcanic sites here.
