Andri Snær Magnason
Icelandic writer and documentary film director
Andri Snær Magnason is an Icelandic writer born in Reykjavik the 14th of July 1973. Andri has a diverse body of work in almost all genres from poetry to nonfiction, children’s books and sci fi as well as being a playwright, documentary film maker and environmental activist. Andri is the only writer that has won the Icelandic Literaty Award in all categories. He has also won major literary awards in France, USA, UK and Italy, Philip K. Dick honorary mention in USA and Premia Tiziano Terzani in Italy. Andri wrote the words to memorize Ok glacier – the first glacier Iceland lost to climate change. His words have been placed on dead glaciers in Mexico, France and Nepal. His latest book On Time and Water has been translated to more than 30 languages and has become a National Geographic Documentary directed by Oscar nominated Sara Dosa, premiering at Sundance 2026. Andri is a frequent artistic collaborator, he has worked or performed with world leading artists like Yo Yo Ma, The Kronos Quartet, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Högni and múm. In architecture he has worked with BIG, Bjarke Ingels Group and most recently SAP architects for the Venice Biennale 2025. Andri lives in Reykjavík.
