Pre-conference excursion
20-22 June 2026
Exploring the Edge of the Arctic
In the spirit of the conference theme, geographers will be offered the chance to sate our restless wanderlust prior to the main conference. You are hereby invited to sign up to travel to the conference venue in Reykjavík through the North of Iceland starting from Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland. The excursion will be led by prof. dr. Edward H. Huijbens, a native of Akureyri but currently chair and professor of the Cultural Geography Group (GEO) at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
Day 1, 20 June: Meeting in Hof, Akureyri 13.00 for a town excursion by foot and using free public transport in town. Day ends at the University of Akureyri for a briefing and conversation at 16.00 (room 262 at Borgir). Dinner maybe joint, but to be decided.
Day 2, 21 June: Travel to Reykjavík via Siglufjörður, Hofsós, Sauðárkrókur and Þverárfjall. A short stop for a dip in Hreðavatn is also planned, so have your trunks on the ready. After the dip we go via Borgarfjörður and Hvalfjörður to reach the city of Reykjavík by dinner time. The trip will take you along fishing villages, new tunnels, mountain roads and agricultural land to reveal the living geography of Iceland, beyond the ‘golden circle’of the capital area.
The excursion starts from Akureyri and you are expected to get there on your own, and find your own accommodation whilst there.
Price: 18.000, includes bus transfer. Lunch on the way is on your own at the famous road side kiosk Staðarskáli.
Capacity is limited to 25 participant
